The "$0 Drive" Stratagem — How We Beat Winter Power Bills in SA

"Hey everyone! It’s May 2026, and if you’re living in South Australia, the game has officially changed. Winter is here, the rain is pouring, and your solar panels are taking a nap. But what if I told you that even on a dark, rainy day, you could still charge your EV and run your home for basically zero dollars? Today, I’m showing you the OG Trade 'Double-Charge' Stratagem."

[10am-1:00pm with AGL] The Midday Hack (The Free 3) "First up: the midday window. Most retailers now offer a 3-hour free electricity block—usually between 11 AM and 2 PM. during this window time, all electricity is free to use for you. Imaging on a rainy day, especially during the winter, your solar isn't doing much, so we flip the script.

You can set your Battery on the APP —to 'Force Grid Charge.' While the grid is free, your battery system will repeat your setting everyday regardless to charge your battery. That’s free energy stored up to get you through the expenses for the rest of the day.

[11pm-6am] The Midnight Hack (EV Plans) "But what about the car? You don't want to drain your 'free' home battery to charge your EV. That’s where the SA EV Plans come in.

  • OVO Energy is currently leading with a massive 4.5c/kWh rate between midnight and 6 AM.

  • AGL and Origin are sitting around 8c/kWh.

  • And Powershop has a shorter 4-hour window at 5c/kWh.

The trick? Schedule your EV to start charging at 12:01 AM. You're essentially 'refueling' your car for the price of a cup of coffee while the rest of the owner is paying 40 cents plus!"

Mandatory Retailer Requirements (General)

Regardless of the provider, almost all free electricity plans in SA share these core conditions:

  • Smart Meter Required: You must have a functioning smart/digital meter installed. This allows the retailer to track your usage specifically during the 3-hour window. If you don't have one, most retailers will arrange an installation (sometimes for free) when you switch.

  • Opt-in Plan: Free power is not automatic. You must explicitly sign up for a specific plan (e.g., OVO’s "The Free 3" or AGL’s "Three for Free").

  • Residential Use: These plans are generally restricted to residential customers, though some small business offers may exist.

Need a battery system? Call to Action "Don't let the winter rain drain your wallet. WithOG Trade battery system, you can exploit these free windows and drive for $0.
