Federal government battery rebate 2025
Federal Battery Rebate – What You Need to Know
Starting 1 July 2025, the Albanese Government will launch the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion initiative aimed at helping over 1 million Australian homes and businesses install solar-connected batteries.
🔋 What is the Federal Battery Rebate?
Eligible households and small businesses can receive up to 30% off the cost of a battery system — that’s approximately $3,700 off a typical 10 kWh battery.
Key eligibility requirements:
-
Battery capacity must be between 5 kWh and 50 kWh
-
Installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installer
-
Connected to a rooftop solar system (new or existing)
-
Commissioned on or after 1 July 2025
-
Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready
-
Installations from April 2025 may qualify if not switched on before July
✅ Eligibility Scenarios
✔️ Replacing an old battery?
Yes, as long as the new system meets all criteria and the property hasn't received this federal rebate before.
✔️ Adding to an existing battery system?
You may be eligible — but only if the property has not previously claimed the federal rebate.
✔️ Already claimed a state incentive?
You’re still eligible. The federal rebate can be combined with:
-
Solar Victoria battery loans
-
NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme
-
WA community battery programs
✔️ Renting?
Tenants cannot claim the rebate directly, but landlords can if they meet the program's requirements.
✔️ Multiple properties?
Yes, each property can claim the rebate once, provided all criteria are met.
✔️ Means-tested?
No. The rebate is not income-based. Anyone who meets the technical and installation requirements can apply.
📌 Important: You Must Have Solar
The rebate only applies to batteries paired with solar systems. If you don’t have solar yet, you’ll need to install it together with your battery to qualify.
⚡ Plan Ahead and Save More
With limited battery supply and high demand expected, now is the perfect time to prepare:
