Federal government battery rebate 2026

Update: Expansion of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program (May 2026)

The Australian Government has significantly expanded the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, increasing funding to $7.2 billion over the next four years. This initiative aims to help over 2 million Australians install battery storage by 2030.

Starting 1 May 2026, new program adjustments have come into effect to align the government discount with current battery costs.

How the Discount Works

The program operates as an expansion of the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Discounts are provided through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The number of STCs your system earns depends on the STC Factor at the time of installation.

Revised STC Factors (2026–2030)

The STC Factor will now decline every six months to match falling market prices.

Period STC Factor
May – December 2026 6.8
January – June 2027 5.7
July – December 2027 5.2
January – June 2028 4.6
July – December 2028 4.1
January – June 2029 3.6
July – December 2029 3.1
January – June 2030 2.6
July – December 2030 2.1

New Support Levels by System Size

To maintain a consistent 30% discount across different home setups, the level of support now tapers based on your battery’s total capacity:

  • First 14 kWh: You receive 100% of the STC Factor.

  • 14 kWh to 28 kWh: Additional capacity receives 60% of the factor.

  • 28 kWh to 50 kWh: Additional capacity receives 15% of the factor.

  • Up to 100 kWh: The program continues to support systems up to this size.
